Abstract: We analyse non-perturbative aspects of the quantum
vacuum of non-abelian gauge theories. The effects of physical space
boundaries on the vacuum energy are computed by Monte Carlo simulations.
The results show that there is an exponential decay of the Casimir
energy with the distance between the boundaries which a governed by an
effective mass that is highly dependent on the type of boundaries.
In all cases such an effective mass is much smaller than the mass of the
lightless particle of the theory (glueball). We also discard
an effective description in terms of massive scalar fields of the low
energy sector of the theories proposed by other authors.
