“Random quantum states,  black holes, and chaos”
Filiberto Ares
(SISSA, Italia)

Abstract:

Hawking’s discovery that black holes can evaporate via
radiation posed questions that have become central to the development of
a quantum theory of gravity. The most famous is the black hole
information paradox, which finds an elegant explanation in Page’s
argument—suggesting that a black hole and its radiation can be
effectively modeled as a random state of qubits.

In this seminar, we revisit Page’s ideas and, using similar
assumptions, investigate whether the emitted radiation can exhibit
emergent symmetries. Page’s work also paved the way for studying
generic many-body quantum systems using random matrix theory. In the
second part of the seminar, we show how random quantum states capture
universal properties of eigenstates in chaotic many-body systems.
